What Are You Drinking Tonight? I became of aware of wine at a very young age when I discovered my father’s stash in the basement. I assume he considered it a cellar although as a place to store wine it lacked a lot. On the other hand, the wine stored was Maywine and, as a non-drinker, I doubt he was concerned with its aging potential. His other favorite wine was Monmousseau, a sparkling Vouvray, which showed up from time to time. I don’t recall wine showing up in our household again until some years later when my mother served white wine to guests. As a teenager the wine of choice was initially any robust red. Later superseded by Blue Nun or Mateus.”Serious” wine did not take a foothold in my life until I was in my twenties. Mouton Cadet was a favorite as was Cotes du Rhone. Soon I was buying more than one bottle at a time and a collection began. I live in Oregon now. I have watched its wine industry grow and mature. I drink a lot of Oregon Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but also a variety of European wines and varietals. I have witnessed the industry, as a whole, benefit from climate change and improved wine making techniques. I have also watched the price of some wines soar astronomically and their producers wonder why they aren’t selling more. But the question always remains, “What are we going to drink with that?” So, from time to time I will post what’s for dinner and what we drank with it. Mostly that will be dinner at home. Sometimes it will be the challenge of picking a wine from a restaurant’s list. This is my first attempt to blog. Hopefully it will go smoothly. We’ll see. Until next time, stay well. |
